After the workshop – other useful information

Brain over Mind?David Eagleman – 22 mins video
A neuroscientist looks at how much of our behaviour is due to brain activity that we are totally unaware of. Free will? Responsibility? Culpability? While the discussion is mostly about bigger social questions, it is highly relevant to organisational approaches to motivation, decision making and behaviour.

The Neurological Basis of Behaviour, the Mind, the Brain and Human Relationships Dan Siegel – 55 mins video
An interesting and detailed discussion about one view of the Brain and the Mind.
Brain definition: a set of interconnected cells that allow electro-chemical energy to flow.
Mind (working) definition: an embodied and relational emergent process that regulates the flow of energy and information. This is a systems view – energy and information flow patterns that have symbolic value.
Relationship: the sharing of energy and information flow (including non-human entities – nature etc). This is the “open” part of the system – outside the body.
Brain, Mind and Relationship define 3 aspects of 1 reality. That 1 reality is energy and information flow. A triangle of human experience.

“If Self is a singular noun, the planet is cooked. If Self is a plural verb (I am more than me – my objectified sense of self, connected to you, and a member of we), then we have a chance to look after the planet.”

Secure, Insecure, Avoidant & Ambivalent Attachment in Mothers & Babies – 4 mins video
This video is a bit dated and the current research indicates a more complex explanation than the one presented. However, it shows examples of the behaviours of the children in the different types of attachment. Warning: most people find it a little heart rending.

Friedman’s Theory of Differentiated Leadership Made Simple – 7 mins video
A video about the application (by Edwin Friedman) of Murray Bowen’s family therapy to organisational behaviour.
